February, 2012 Newsletter
Date and Agenda Topic for February Meeting:
Tuesday, February 7, 2012, 6:30pm
AmeriSchools Academy, 1333 W. Camelback Rd.

Steven’s Report: (Steven Sible, Chair)
Already February and the first of the year PNA Board Member elections are
complete. Thank you to everyone who turned out to vote. The good news is
that all the board members were voted in for another year. So it’s time to
get started with planning all the upcoming events. We have a lot of exciting
events coming up and looking for neighborhood participation as well as some
new and hopefully improved changes. The biggest change is that we are
moving to a quarterly meeting agenda to try and accommodate all the family
lifestyle and schedules within our neighborhood. Our goal this year is to
challenge everyone to try and attend at least one meeting or event this
year. What we have found is that most neighborhood associations around us
are meeting on a bi-monthly or quarterly basis and that seems to work well.
We also know that not everyone can attend on a week day evening so to
accommodate as many people as possible we are having our Quarterly First
Tuesday of the Month meeting at 6:30 PM at AmeriSchools with our normal
business agenda and either Community Action Officer Aaron Stevens or
Neighborhood Services Specialist Lisa Hubbard. Then on the following
Saturday, February 11th at 10:00 AM at a designated home in our
neighborhood, we will have coffee and doughnuts, a quick informal review of
key points from the Tuesday meeting, and then a Guest Speaker related to
one of the topics requested in the recent neighborhood survey. Between the
two meetings each quarter that will give everyone an opportunity to choose
one or the other (or both) that strikes your interest. Again we are trying this
for a year and at the end of the year we can evaluate and see if this is
working or not.

A couple of the special events we have planned in the coming months:
• Melrose on 7th Street Fair Saturday March 3rd
• The Annual PNA Spring Clean-Up planned for Saturday March 24th
• 1st Annual PNA Pancake Breakfast Saturday April 21st
• October the PNA GAIN Event and Annual Block Party.
Mark your calendars now for meeting dates and special events coming up.

This past month has been fairly quiet in the neighborhood which is a good
thing. The biggest issue the past few months has been all the graffiti and
with our great Graffiti Busters, April and Ray and a few of the street captains
armed with paint, brushes, and rollers, we have been able to keep up.
However we are looking for more volunteers to help within the neighborhood
to keep this graffiti covered up on a regular basis and I am committed to
this year to attend the Blight Busters training program. I will get the info
and dates out to everyone and see if anyone would like to join me and we
can train together and help April and Ray be partners in Grime Removal and
stamp out Graffiti!

2012 Meeting Agenda:
Tuesday February 7th – PNA Meeting - 6:30 PM AmeriSchools Academy
Guest Speaker Lisa Hubbard Neighborhood Services Liaison
Saturday February 11th – PNA Meeting – 10:00 AM – 1302 W Colter

200px-Olive-tree-leaf-0.jpgOlive leaf remedy for bad head cold or flu
shared by our neighbor, Trish Robinson
Here’s a great remedy to help get over the hump
with a bad head cold or flu:
If you have an olive tree available, pick 25-30
healthy leaves and wash them. Boil about 3 C of
water. When water is boiling, reduce heat and add the olive leaves. Let steep for 15-20
minutes. Pour a cup, add a tsp of honey and a tsp of lemon juice and sip up.
Sip a cup every hour for about 3 hours, then another one before bedtime.
Within about an hour, your head will clear; within 3 hours you may develop
some chills/fever, but that’s a good sign your immune system is kicking in.
You will be able to sleep comfortably. Next morning, fever should be gone
and energy will be better. If still congested, sip more tea through the day.
Absolutely safe with no side-effects. For more information, Google olive leaf
extracts—but you don’t have to buy when you can make it yourself :-) You
can learn more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olive_leaf

I have had training as a medicinal herbalist and have been using this tea for
the last couple of days because I was having flu symptoms after too much
Holiday sugar and not enough rest. Nose is a little runny, but otherwise feel
great. I’m not diagnosing, just sharing information.
Thanks,
Trish Robinson, W. Pasadena Ave.

What’s New in the Neighborhood?
NeighborsHelpingNeighbors.pngGlad you asked! A lot of things happening in the
neighborhood recently; first I would like to remind
everyone to go out and sign up for Pasadena
Neighborhood Website. There’s a lot of good information
and links to neighborhood and valley resources
available. We also have several new neighbors. So
please make sure and welcome our newest residents and make them feelwelcome. Please make sure they get a copy of the monthly PNA newsletter so they are aware of all the information available including the getting them signed up for the PNA Website and added to the PNA Email distribution list so they get notified of all the latest happenings, upcoming meetings and
urgent notifications.

I was all prepared to let everyone know that the City of Phoenix
Transportation Dept. was in the process of replacing the bus stop located at
15th Avenue and Colter. It has now been replaced. The next new item I
noticed this week was after several years of complaining and pushing, the
Colter Park playground equipment canopy has finally been replaced. Now the
kids will have a little shade when the days start getting warmer.
Next item on the list is the changes at 7th Avenue and Camelback. If you
have not noticed there is a new Alliance Urgent Care facility where the old
Block Buster Video used to be. We also have an update on the old Target
store. We are told there are plans in the works to put a Gym in the old
Target building. I do not have many details at this time but keep your eyes
open for work to begin on that location soon.

And if you have not stopped in Circle H Barbecue yet, stop in and say Howdy
and give them a try. The food is great, the owners are very friendly and two
of our very own residents Al and Elliott work there so stop in and tell them
you live in the Pasadena Neighborhood. My personal favorite is the Brisket
Sandwich and homemade bread pudding. The owners have been fine-tuning
a few of the menu items as well as the décor and you will notice a parking
meter located next to the restrooms. No you don’t have to pay to potty but if
you do drop a coin into the meter all the proceeds from the “Tinkle Timer”
are being donated to local charity!

And last on my list are all the local businesses that are located on the
borders of our neighborhood that go unnoticed. When I was delivering the
December PNA Newsletter I stopped in several of them and introduced
myself and promised to include them in our monthly PNA Newsletter delivery
as they are part of our neighborhood. Besides Starbucks Coffee, along 7th
Ave we have Lori’s Snip & Clip Grooming, Da Vinci Dental Group, Start Farm
Agent Nichole Schaffer, 7th Ave Hair Design, and Country Club Insurance.
Then on Camelback we have Clancy Real Estate Group, New Law Offices of
Samuel P. Moeller, R.M.G. Realty Inc. Property Management, and Mr. Credit
& Mr. Insurance. And on the corner of 15th Ave and Camelback there is a lot
of work being invested into the old Eye Center so keep your eyes open for
something to go in there very soon. These are just a few of the small and
large business owners that are within our neighborhood boundaries and
there are a lot of great small business owners across 7th Ave and across
Camelback including a new charter school for students with disabilities.
We live in an awesome neighborhood and if you know of anyone looking for
a home to purchase or lease have them check out the available properties
within our neighborhood.

GRAFFITI….. The UGLY Art!
graffiti.jpgI was talking with one of our neighbors, Devon,
today about Graffiti, and Devon reminded me of
an instance late last year where he caught
taggers in the alley behind his home. If I
remember correctly, the police caught the
taggers and arrested them. One of Devon’s
comments to the kid he caught tagging his
block wall was “Dude, you’re not the greatest
artist, but with a little practice on some plywood you may be able to sell your artwork monthly at the First Friday’s Art Walk where someone may pay
you for your work and keep it off our walls where we really don’t want to look at it.” It was sad but true. None of us want to look at this and we know through our work with the Phoenix Police Department that this is not gang related, but kids with nothing better to do.

The city of Phoenix just graduated the sixth new batch of Blight Buster
Volunteers, 13 residents that completed the Blight Buster Volunteer
Program’s training offered by the Neighborhood Services Department. As
part of their training, they learn how to clean up alleyways, remove illegal
signs and graffiti, use GPS cameras to report flight, and experience the
dynamics of a volunteer program. To date, the program has more than 110
Blight Buster volunteers, who help address blight and vandalism throughout
the city’s boundaries including our very own April and Ray M. who work
diligently to keep our neighborhood graffiti free. Along with April and Ray,
AJ, and myself have helped with smaller projects within our own
neighborhood and this is where I personally learned there are truly a million
shades of gray!

April and Ray have done a great job but we all need to pitch in and be
responsible for our own properties as much as possible and we are always
looking for volunteers to help within our own neighborhood. I myself, Devon
and possibly AJ are committed to getting more training to help April & Ray
keep our neighborhood beautiful. Would you like to make a difference in
your own neighborhood by keeping it clean and safe? Consider being a
bonafide Blight Buster volunteer and join the program! The next free training
will be at 6:00 PM Tuesday March 6th 2012 at the NSD West Facility, 3325
W. Flower Street. For more information, please visit the
www.phoenix.gov/nsd or call 602-495-0323. Or contact myself, AJ, or April
& Ray about information, supplies, or attending one of the upcoming training
classes. Let’s all work together to keep our Pasadena Neighborhood
Association Graffiti Free.

Subject:  Redistricting Process for City Council Districts.

Redistrictingimage.jpg

As an active community member, the City of Phoenix is requesting your input on its upcoming redistricting process to ensure the new city council district maps are reflective of community interests.

As required by the Federal and State constitutions, and consistent with federal law regarding apportionment, the City Code requires the City Council to revise council district boundaries to equalize population distribution at least once every 10 years based on the decennial census.  The current council district boundaries became effective January 2003 following the 2000 decennial census.  District population, based on the 2010 census, varies from the smallest at 150,919 (District 4) to the largest at 261,458 (District 7.  To equalize district population, the ideal population size for each is 180,704.  To achieve this, most districts will need to gain population, with a few losing population, while maintaining minority voting strength.

The City’s public process will begin with public meetings conducted in each
Council District between January 31st and February 17th, 2012 to provide
residents with information about the redistricting process, to distribute
redistricting materials, and to obtain input from residents regarding
communities of interest. Additionally, the City’s redistricting website will
contain all materials provided in the public meetings and online mapping
program to allow residents to draw proposed boundary lines, see statistical
data on the proposed boundaries, and submit proposed district maps for
review and analysis. The City encourages you to participate in the public
meetings and also make use of the redistricting website and online mapping
tool located at www.phoenix.gov/redistricting.

Based on input received from the public and the mapping consultant team
will compile several draft maps for consideration by Mayor and Council. A
second round of public meetings will occur for public feedback on these draft
maps. The second round of meetings in planned for late April and early May.
Based on public feedback, the maps will be refined and the Mayor and
Council will vote on a final map that will be submitted to the Department of
Justice for preclearance.

Enclosed, please find the public meeting dates and locations. Please share
this information with your friends and neighbors. If you have any questions
or comments, please contact the City’s redistricting hotline at (602) 256-
4357 or by email at redistricting@phoenix.gov.

If you are unable to attend a public meeting but wish to provide feedback, please email your comments to redistricting@phoenix.gov or call 602-256-4357. We value your thoughts and suggestions

Sincerely, Chris Meyer - City Clerk
